Custer State Park & Black Hills

It took all day to see Custer State Park and the surrounding area, all in the Black Hills National Park. We drove by Mount Rushmore about 11:00 am and the traffic backup into the monument was about a mile long. We decided to see it another day. The best drive and scenery is the Needles Highway.

Needles Highway

There is a tunnel here.

Just wide enough for a car to drive through (carefully).

The ground elevation here was 6400 feet.
We are surrounded by rock tops are much higher than this.
Clingmans Dome in the Smokies is about 6600 feet.

Mules like the crowd along the road.

Bison along the road. They cross and cars stop.

Loks like that campground shares it with the bison. Watch where you step!

Crazy Horse with my zoom lens from the highway.
We did not go into the monument area.

We drove through the town of Custer.
